What is “Oxygen Index”

Firstly,let’s introduce LOI(Limited Oxygen Index).LOI is an index which can evaluate the performance of burning.Under the specified test conditions,the oxygen concentration in the mixture of oxygen and nitrogen is just the minimum oxygen concentration required for the material to remain in combustion state.  

When we test the LOI of materials, the sample is vertically fixed in the transparent combustion cylinder of upward flowing oxygen and nitrogen mixture gas, and the top of the sample is ignited to observe the combustion characteristics of the sample. The continuous combustion time or combustion length of the sample is compared with the given limit value.  The minimum oxygen concentration in terms of oxygen percentage during maintenance combustion was measured by a series of samples at different oxygen concentrations.  

In fact,generally, what we call the oxygen index is the limiting oxygen index.  

Oxygen index is used to evaluate the combustion performance of materials.High oxygen index means that materials are not easy to burn, while low oxygen index means that materials are easy to burn.We list below:

Oxygen index ＜22  It’s easy to burn

Oxygen index  22-27 It’s flammable

Oxygen index ＞27  It’s difficult to burn

Oxygen index is generally measured by oxygen index meter.You can choose the standards as what you want,such as ISO4589-2,ASTM D2863,GB/T 2406,GB/T 5454.
